- Or in cases like the 2013 Shelby v. Holder case, which ultimately took the teeth out of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

- Not only are these values under threat, but so are America’s democratic principles and traditions.
- To this day, we continue to see baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen from the former president. More worrisome, this anti-democratic belief has taken deep root in the Republican party.
- “For a long time, we’ve told ourselves that American democracy is guaranteed. But it’s not,” President Biden recently said. “We have to defend it, protect it, stand up for it – each and every one of us.”

- DC statehood is integral to saving democracy.
- Statehood will bolster democracy, return self-governance to DC residents and give them proportional representation in Congress, where DC’s senators can be the deciding vote to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Women’s Health Protection Act.
- If we maintain the numbers in the Senate and add two more senators, President Biden has said he will not let the filibuster get in the way of signing these two historical bills.
